Circuits
A circuit is a minimal dependent set: a subset of $E$ that is not independent (not contained in any basis) but all of whose proper subsets are. A loop is a circuit of size 1, and two elements are parallel when they form a circuit of size 2. For the matroid of a matrix, the circuits are the minimal linearly dependent sets of columns; for a graph, they are the cycles.
