Rank

The rank $r$ of a matroid is the common size of its bases, i.e. the size of a largest independent set. More generally, the rank $r(A)$ of a subset $A \subseteq E$ is the size of a largest independent subset of $A$. For the matroid of the columns of a matrix, this is the usual rank of the matrix (or of the chosen columns).
