Hyperplanes

A hyperplane is a flat of rank $r-1$, where $r$ is the rank; equivalently, a maximal non-spanning set. The complements of the hyperplanes are the cocircuits, i.e. the circuits of the dual matroid.

In rank 3 the hyperplanes are the rank-2 flats. Those containing at least three points are the nontrivial lines.
